About ME
Brigadier General (Retd.) A. T. M. Ziaul Hasan, rcds, psc is a strategist, military analyst, author, and public intellectual specializing in national security, defense policy, and South Asian geopolitics. A graduate of the Royal College of Defence Studies (London), the Army Staff College (Bangladesh), the Expeditionary Warfare College (USMC), and King's College London, he combines extensive military experience with academic excellence.
Through his books, articles, and policy analysis, he contributes to informed discourse on Bangladesh’s strategic and security landscape.
Professional Experience
THE START
A T M Ziaul Hasan entered the Bangladesh Military Academy with an average academic record but a powerful ambition to become an Army officer. His early days were demanding, and his first-term performance was modest. A Platoon Commander’s guidance in the second term helped him recognise his potential and embrace discipline, hard work and military values.
He soon rose among the leading cadets of his batch, serving as Platoon Corporal and later as Company Senior Under Officer. His journey began a distinguished 30-year military career and proves to Gen Z and Generation Alpha that ordinary beginnings can lead to extraordinary leadership.

Second Lieutenant A.T.M. Ziaul Hasan was commissioned into the 27th Battalion of the East Bengal Regiment as an infantry officer. His early military life was shaped by exceptional mentors, particularly his first Adjutant, Captain Asadur Rahman Khan, and Commanding Officers Lt Col Jamil D Ahsan, BP, Lt Col Mohammad Abdul Matin, Lt Col Asrarul Haque and Lt Col Mohsin Ahmed Choudhury. Their demanding guidance moulded him into a committed regimental officer and inspired his lifelong focus on developing disciplined infantry soldiers.
His career included command, instructional, operational and strategic appointments:
- Instructor at the School of Infantry and Tactics.
- Counter-insurgency service and Brigade Major of an infantry brigade.
- Graduate of the USMC Expeditionary Warfare Course in Quantico, Virginia.
- Operational staff service in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
- UN Military Observer and Deputy Chief Operations Officer for UNOMIG (Georgia–Abkhazia).
- Commanding Officer of the 27th East Bengal Regiment.
- Directing Staff (DS) at the Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC).
- Battalion Commander and Principal of MCSK.
- Infantry Brigade Commander in Comilla and the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
- Graduate of the Royal College of Defence Studies and holder of an MA in International Relations from King’s College London.
- Director of Military Operations for the Bangladesh Army.
- Brigade Commander of a multinational force in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
- Commandant of the School of Infantry and Tactics.
